There needs to be a change in unions. The old them versus us paradigm is broken.
Old labor laws allowed the coal age exploitation of Appalachia and the UK industrial revolution = General Bullmoose was soon upturned and now in the USA/UK we have unions actually becoming an elite group. In Oshawa, Canada, if a worker is laid off and he seeks an interim job, he need not apply if the company is aware of his status - employers know he will vanish with zero notice if he is given a next day recall to GM. He may conceal his laid off status - but vanish he will if recalled.
The net effect of this is fewer jobs in USA/Canada and perhaps UK?
I prefer the Japanese/Korean/European model where workers have(in many cases) management representation on the board of directors = they see all aspects of labor and manufacturing and I recall many unions agreeing to moderation and even lowering of wage demands - for the good of the company and thus the workers be the better competitive posture this gave their company/industry.
This is very clear in the USA where 75% of auto jobs were lost to imports (as well as some to wage driven automation) from the 60's to the present day.
