China might crush the West in the race to AGI if we don’t

- giardini 4y agoSeems another way to AGI with LLMs is to curate the inputs as well as possible. Letting an LLM loose on the broader internet is undoubtedly quicker and easier but a little discipline sometimes helps. I don't know how well-curated GPT-4's inputs are. In any case I don't want an LLM to sell me Viagra or talk to me about how crystals will enhance my spiritual vigor et al. An LLM that is educated to Masters' level in the languages, science and computer science should be a good start. Seems we're close but I am uncertain whether news that GPT-4 can pass the legal bar exam is a "good thing": "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." - William Shakespeare in "Henry the Sixth" https://www.enotes.com/shakespeare-quotes/lets-kill-all-lawyers https://www.enotes.com/shakespeare-quotes/lets-kill-all-lawy...
- onethought 4y agoSo China got to 5G faster than the west… did they crush the west? They got to cardless/cashless payments before the west. Did that crush them? They built the largest and most used (every day by everyone for everything) app. Did that crush the west? They crushed the west on solar, EVs, banking security, manufacturing… Love this framing of China as a bad guy… but all of those things above have either had no effect or been beneficial for “the west”. Why will AGI be different?
