Sample size of one, but even a half course of antibiotics wreaks havoc on my wife's gut. Which is why she doesn't follow the rest of her family in popping antibiotics for the common cold. In contrast though, she had a surgical operation last year (in the US). The hospital refused to give her antibiotics immediately following the operation, saying she probably wouldn't need it. This was shocking for her - and the surgical site actually did end up getting mildly infected.
