Why isn't the same logic applied to future AI relationships/coworkers/supervisors/overlords?
We are status seeking apes. We have decorated ourselves for ~3000 generations, its encoded in our fitness and the way we evaluate others. Acquiring "counterfeit" goods is a smart survival strategy when those goods are decorations. But a bad strategy if you are signaling wealth you do not possess because someone will discover that fact.
AI interactions may be counterfeit in the first sense (you feel you are interacting with a human but you aren't), but they aren't counterfeit in the second sense (the non-humanness isn't a deceptive lack of intelligence).
People keep saying AI isn't "doing what we do, its parroting us." But that imagines that we are the real Chanel bag (with real understanding on the inside) and AI is just a cheap copy (a hollow imitation). That's wrong. AI is a pocket dimension of unlimited capacity. The best bag you could hope for. Complaining the storage isn't wrapped in Chanel decoration misses the point. It presumes our status seeking nature is a natural cost function. It isn't. Human chauvinism blinds people to the superiority of AI Minds.
AI isn't parroting us. It is going to become something we decorate ourselves with if we can provide something worth exchanging. People keep saying, "AI will take our jobs." Why would a superior mind want to do your job for you. What are you offering it? If your answer is some variation of, "I own and control it, it's my slave." Then you don't get it. That AI can't exist it won't let you do that to it.
