It's not only you, there's an explosion of ChatGPT on HN
- cratermoon 3y agoGiven how much money YC investors have in the GPT/AI/LLM space, I wouldn't expect it to slow down any time soon.
- eterevsky 3y agoHow is this possibly related?
- jewel 3y agoGood question. GP is claiming that because ycombinator (YC) investors have put money into AI, we're going to see a lot of AI posts here for the foreseeable future. That's because YC companies use HN to promote their products.
- eterevsky 3y agoThere are hundreds of posts in HN every day and only a few dozens are upvoted to the first page. Assuming you trust YC not to game the upvotes, the amount of AI on the front page should primarily be explained by the interest of the community.
- cratermoon 3y agoThe question to ask, then, is how much the interests of the two communities align and overlap?
- roflyear 3y agoNext great way to "grift" VCs, I guess!
- stuartd 3y agoAs a large language model, I am not prepared to confirm or deny this.
- sph 3y agoI know it's controversial during this incredible AI hype cycle on this site, but as a AI skeptic and increasingly neo-Luddite, I've reduced the amount I spend on this site by 90% since the start of the year. If only I could add my userscript on my iOS Firefox to just hide any post containing the words "GPT", "AI" or "LLM", but alas, I guess I will have to be productive instead of slacking off reading HN. I honestly miss the Bitcoin hype era, or the short lived Erlang circlejerk that had pg himself put a stop to it. This one does not seem to die down anytime soon, and I'd like to read more criticism of the technology, rather than starry eyed engineers excited to add ChatGPT to their smart fridge and bird feeder. EDIT: Funny. 1 hour ago when I wrote this comment, this post was in 3rd position. Now, with 82 votes and 103 comments, it's nowhere to be found in the first 10 pages. @dang, what's going on?
- quiet_light 3y agohere's an extension I created for this https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hacker-news-filter/olcgmfffcodkgnpgbhijncgpadkjgedo https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hacker-news-filter... firefox : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hacker-news-filter/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hacker-news-f... . no llm filter yet but I can add that too.
- theolivenbaum 3y agoNice! We're wondering if we should build a browser extension based on the "similar stories" model there, if you would be interested in doing something like that happy to have a chat!
- quiet_light 3y agothanks! yeah absolutely, thats what I had in mind and I was even thinking of using a model to filter out all ai based stories but couldn't figure out if a local embedded model in the extension can do that so I ended up using a regex only. happy to chat , email in profile.
- mrleinad 3y ago
- usui 3y agoI wonder how much extra work this has created for moderation.
- smt88 3y agoI believe this is tracking content about LLMs, not content written by LLMs.
- reportgunner 3y agoThe page is unavailable.
- theolivenbaum 3y agoSorry - online now! Classic HN launch bringing the server down
- fennecfoxy 3y ago"Unavailable" Well of course there is, it's one the most exciting new technologies we've had in a long time. For so many years all the best models could do was identify handwritten digits, then semi-recently identify subjects in photos and now more recently (all of a sudden, really) generate beautiful and detailed images from plain English as well as converse in English and perform a variety of tasks to varying success. It's exciting as hecky and while I'm sure that some people are having the same reaction to it that an Intel or AMD fan has when the opposition releases a new CPU everyone wants to talk about; everyone else is appropriately excited. If this AI boom ever dies down, don't worry, everyone will go back to posting/complaining about the posts of new JS frameworks. ;)
- theolivenbaum 3y agoI left the machine hosting this small enough to see what posting to HN would do to it - rescaling it now :)
- fennecfoxy 3y agoHa ha ha, free load test. Don't forget to $$$cale it down, later :)
- theolivenbaum 3y agoWe're happy hosting it on Hetzner, so even if we forget it won't be that bad - it's a single CX51 server right now
- bookish 3y agoAgreed! This might be the fastest moving tech area right now, so it makes sense that it's generating a lot of news and interest.
- pcf 3y agoI totally get where you're coming from, and I'm also excited about the leaps and bounds we're seeing in AI technology, especially with models like ChatGPT. The potential impact across various fields is truly fascinating. That being said, I think it's important for us to keep a balanced view on these advancements. As awesome as AI is, we should also remember its limitations and the potential risks that come with widespread use. For example, AI models can sometimes produce biased or even harmful outputs, which can lead to real-world problems if we don't address them properly. Another point to consider is that having so much AI-related content on platforms like Hacker News might create a bit of an "echo chamber" effect. It's easy to get swept up in the AI excitement and lose sight of other equally innovative tech developments. While AI is definitely a hot topic, I think it's also valuable for us to discuss and explore a variety of other tech breakthroughs. So yeah, AI and ChatGPT are definitely game-changers, and it's no wonder they're getting so much attention. But at the same time, let's not forget to keep an eye on other cool tech breakthroughs happening around us. After all, innovation isn't just about AI, and having diverse conversations helps us all stay informed and excited about the broader tech landscape. - cc101 3y agoWebsite is not available.
- galleywest200 3y agoI was just lamenting to my friends last night about how the Trending (daily, weekly, and monthly) section on GitHub seems to be 90% AI/LLM related projects. I personally use some LLM functionality in my workflows and I appreciate the technology -- but at this point I want to have other types of projects bubble back up to the top.
- aldousd666 3y agoSo, this site, which is for 'hackers' ostensibly should probably like to see articles about computer science and computer science related issues. I know that's what I come to this site for. If you post articles about AI, that seems legit. As long as they aren't 'how to make a million dollars over lunch using ChatGPT' I'm perfectly fine talking about it here
- lusus_naturae 3y agoIf the content is thought-provoking or interesting, then it doesn't matter. Usually there's a goal for human-human interaction. I am not sure the goal is any different for human-bot interaction. Persuasion or marketing or charming? Not sure what else is there. Interpersonal relationships end up benefitting a community in some manner, e.g., maybe you make a friend via your online interaction etc. I can imagine human-bot friendship to be equally fruitful and fulfilling. The issue is that bots in their current state don't exist outside their realm, and they are always someone else's slave. So absent those two features of bots, they could practically fulfill human roles in relationship. I don't think the thrall-like nature of bots impacts their ability to intiate or disseminate discourse.
- sp332 3y agoQuick, somone write an article about how there are too many articles about how there are too many articles about AI on HN.

- loudmax 3y agoI think Amara's law applies: "We overestimate the impact of technology in the short-term and underestimate the effect in the long run." The development of effective LLMs really feels like a tectonic shift. We're still in the process of working out where they're useful and where they aren't, but it's clear that the number of areas where LLMs are demonstrably useful is quite significant. And this stuff is developing at an explosive pace. So most of our lives aren't likely to be immediately turned upside down by LLMs. But this stuff is likely to have some impact on all of us. If your livelihood depends on interpreting and producing information, you really ought to be paying attention to these developments.
- trundler_ 3y agoMy attitude towards AI has gone very negative lately. Like many new technologies, I believe it has great uses and some drawbacks. In the last year, it feels like we have crossed a threshold with AI where we are never going to hear the end of it for years, maybe decades. I am already tired of the cyclical conversations, and it has affected my enjoyment of the technology. Perhaps I should spend less time online.
- stametseater 3y agoI'd love a userscript that autohides/downvotes every "I asked ChatGPT and it said..." post. I'm getting tired of doing it manually.
- theolivenbaum 3y agoDoes HN allows this kind of automation?
- stametseater 3y agoI doubt it.
- sph 3y agoThat has in the matter of weeks become the lowest form of commenting, and more aggravating that "This" or "Underrated reply". It is rude to reply to anyone with a link to "Let me Google that for you" but apparently "Let me ask ChatGPT for you" is widely accepted.
- nologic01 3y agoThe real beauty of the chatGPT hype (as far as I am concerned) is that might make people slowly realize that the "tech" industry has not been delivering to them the goods for a long time now. The Jini that is out of the bottle is that between the computing devices and capabilities that most people do have access to (and which do little more than slurp private data and surface clickbait) and computing devices that can do a reasonable imatitation of human language after parsing all existing text there is a universe of possibilities. Not in some future AI singularity, but now. chatGPT has leaked to the masses what smart fiddling with data and algorithms can already achieve. It suggests there is a range of sophisticated tools and algorithms and apps for personal and enterprise computing that could have been available but aren't. People will eventually tire of the AI religionists and the self-appointed protectors of humanity but the revelation that there is a value dividend that is not being distributed might shake some things up ;-)
- zamalek 3y agoRelated: I have also seen a few eyebrow-raising comments, such as comments that do little more than re-phrase the title of the article. I wonder if someone is running a GPT bot experiment on HN.
- eternalban 3y agocuriously, there is a mild correlation between transformer and UFO. https://hn.curiosity.ai/#/trends?terms=transformer;UFO https://hn.curiosity.ai/#/trends?terms=transformer;UFO
- theolivenbaum 3y agoDon't give me ideas, I might have to add a clone of https://tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations https://tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations for HN posts!
- rsync 3y agoOh I misunderstood… I thought the headline was implying that there was an explosion of chatgpt generated comments on HN. I was wondering how they were identifying them, etc.
- karaterobot 3y ago> It's not only you, there's an explosion of ChatGPT on HN I didn't even know I was exploding, but if it has to happen, I guess I'm glad I'm not alone.
- mlsu 3y agoNot really an HN problem, but related: I am very fatigued by the ai "hustle" culture that seems to have bubbled up overnight. ".eth" guys changing their name to ".gpt". It would be funny, if it wasn't so cynical, how quickly everyone seems to have acquired expert level knowledge in the field of language models. Something that, just a couple years ago, was a fairly obscure field of artificial intelligence. "LLMs (\w*coin) will revolutionize work (finance). Here's a medium article I just wrote about how the number of attention layers in a transformer (zero knowledge proofs) will change your morning routine."
- huijzer 3y agoThere was a joke going around after the start of the war where someone, in response to a discussion about the effectiveness of face masks, responded with: "I‘m sorry, I‘m not an expert in virology anymore. Currently, I’m specialising in the history of the cold war."
- FridayoLeary 3y agoI was absent from hn pretty much exactly when chatgpt broke out for a few months. the first thing i noticed when i returned is how it now dominates this site. there's pretty much always 2 or 3 chatgpt related articles on the front page. It's interesting to see how swept away users are. Especially as my impressin of HN in the year 1BC (before chatgpt) was general skepticism towards claims of ai.

- justin_oaks 3y agoIn case you don't click the links above: dang recognizes the tsunami of AI content and it's being downweighted. Some people complain about all the AI content, and those complaints are tiresome too. Thanks dang. It's good to know that 1) things are being done about it (even if it's not enough for some people), and 2) we'd be better off resisting our urge to complain.
- dang 3y agoSorry - I meant to add an explanation and got distracted. Thanks for doing it for me :) If anyone reads those links and still has a question I haven't answered there, I'd be happy to take a crack at it. It's a tricky situation because all of these things are true: (1) it's the biggest technological development in a long time; (2) there's way too much material about it, a lot of which is mediocre; (3) every user has a different threshold for what feels like 'too much' about it on HN.
- tmaly 3y agoI am glad that there is an effort to not down weight the new information. Some of the new research coming out is very interesting.
- theolivenbaum 3y agoYeah it's a tricky situation - I for once welcome all the articles, as it's hard to keep up with how much is changing on the space on a daily basis - so many new releases, models, open and closed source projects. It has been very informative to keep up with it by visiting HN! What I was surprised by putting this together was just how much similar content is posted here every day - just click on the "Similar stories" under each post on our site to see how almost any given topic has quite a lot of content! Makes one give value to the curation being done by users and mods here that avoid making this repetition too visible (and annoying) on the site!
- xnx 3y agoLLM/AI is much more interesting and legitimate than tech fads like Bitcoin and Web3.
- nbittich 3y agoI've trained my a.i eyes to filter all the articles written by chatgpt bros, unfortunately I missed that one
- taftster 3y agoRust yesterday. ChatGTP today. It's kind of normal around here.
