From your long description of the travails of using your phone with a terminal, I’m not sure you know this: you can double-click the power button at any time, and it will do Face ID and pre-approve a transaction - _then_ you can hold it to the terminal to pay. I’m imagining you, from the description, holding the phone to the terminal then trying to frame your face so that Face ID can see it - which works, but is as annoying as you seem to be describing.
