The banality of floods (and droughts)
- ocrow 4y agoI don't expect that newspapers will suddenly decide to start doing in depth investigations into systemic failures of hydrologic systems. Nonetheless it's hard to develop nuanced perspectives on what needs changing without knowing what the current system does well and what it does poorly and why it is the way that it is. If we're going to have sensible public policy we need to educate ourselves better so that we're not always just reacting to the immediate crisis, but actually developing policies that are workable.
- 1letterunixname 4y agoTo deal with climate change, most, if not all, municipalities will need far greater water storage and drainage capacities than they currently have.
- swalling 4y agoThere may also be municipalities that will die because they cannot sustain the financial burden of doing so or which are just simply located in totally unrealistic places for their current use. For instance, the small towns bordering Tulare Lake and other historical flood zones. Or the absurd golf courses and mega-farms in the middle of the desert sucking the Colorado River dry.
