Having lived in Japan for over a decade now I can say they have always been a culture that leaves things to computers if possible. Vending machines are everywhere and many places had vending machines that would give you a ticket to get a service or product from employees. In the last six months a few places I shop at have gone full self checkout (complete with those who couldn’t understand or work the machines causing slowdowns). However, having an AI tool run city hall is something of a bigger jump. The article doesn’t really go into detail on what it does. I wonder if they tried to hire humans first for decent pay or just had the unicorn hunt then concluded AI wins the job.
