No, it is not. This article is just more generic pill-shaming vaguely gesturing at holistic/integrative medicine.
The massive improvement in the quality of life of psychiatric patients over the past century is due entirely to psychotropic drugs. Not to some new mode of talk therapy. Pills are not ersatz therapy.
The idea that what psychiatry patients need is social change---that we should withhold pills until we've rebuilt all of society to be just and fair and free of abuse---is absurd. If we'd taken that route, the burden of mental illness today would be unimaginable. But we didn't, and we made progress in pharmacology.
People have been talking about this "oh, psychiatric is too focused on biology, we have to consider the [etc.] context" since literally forever. Yet it is only psychiatry that has made a dent in psychological morbidity. Because we are made of flesh, and all emotions come from biological chains cause-and-effect that can be changed by drugs.
>Shortcomings and all, so far psychopharmaceuticals have been an essential resource in psychiatry. But their future is uncertain.
It is not. Psychotropic drugs have cured oceans of suffering and prevented millions of deaths.
