Chipmaker Arm to make its own semiconductor, Financial Times reports
- eigenform 3y agoI'm confused about what this is supposed to mean - the FT article is vacuous too. Without more specific language, I assume this is just reiterating the Intel Foundry Services[^1] thing. From the Intel newsroom: > IFS and Arm will undertake design technology co-optimization (DTCO), in which chip design and process technologies are optimized together to improve power, performance, area and cost (PPAC) for Arm cores targeting Intel 18A process technology [...] IFS and Arm will develop a mobile reference design, allowing demonstration of the software and system knowledge for foundry customers. With the industry’s evolution from DTCO to system technology co-optimization (STCO), Arm and IFS will work together to optimize the platforms from applications and software through package and silicon, leveraging Intel’s unique open system foundry model. Unless "making your own semiconductor" is supposed to mean "semiconductor process design," but it seems more likely this is about taping out some prototype (like they did with Morello[^2] on TSMC 7FF). - walterbell 3y agoPossible change in business model, to become a merchant silicon vendor, e.g. in competition with Qualcomm? https://twitter.com/chiakokhua/status/1650114162310389767 https://twitter.com/chiakokhua/status/1650114162310389767
