And Minecraft is a computer game one can no longer play legally after microsoft bought it (without creating a microsoft account). That's worse than piracy.

- charcircuit 3y agoBefore to legally play it you had to create a Mojang account and before that you had to make a Minecraft account. Minecraft has always required an account.
- McGlockenshire 3y agoI'm not sure if "always" is right here, but this has been true since at least 2015.
- tehbeard 3y agoPrevious accounts trusted you at your word/cc regarding who you are. Quite a few of us migrated to ms accounts, only to get blocked and the minecraft username/account ransomed until we gave Microsoft our mobile phone numbers due to "suspicious activity". Said activity being signing in to the launcher post migration....
- The_SamminAter 3y agoSome of us still haven’t migrated. The legacy Java launcher still honours our Mojang logins. I refuse to migrate my account, until the day they shut the Mojang servers down. Which I fear may be soon.
- jesprenj 3y agoYes, that's true, but you no longer get session cookies for authenticating your username -- you always play "offline". Though I'm glad it's still possible to play the game with the official launcher with mojang login (I mainly use polymc to start the game).
- The_SamminAter 3y agoI can play multiplayer and on servers though (as long as they’re <1.17, as I’ve only been able to get the Java launcher to run up to 1.16.x). Does PolyMC still let you log in with a Mojang account? I know that MultiMC doesn’t.
- jesprenj 3y agoYes, polymc supports mojang login. This patch [0] I tried to use to bypass login did not work -- I have to login with mojang to start the game on polymc. For multimc there's a fork called ultimmc that allows playing without an account. Some servers do not require authenticated accounts and work in so-called "offline mode" where authenticity of usernames is not verified with mojang servers (created for playing on a LAN). Many servers on the other hand require usernames of connecting clients to be verified -- and this does not work anymore (at least for me) with the mojang login. wiki.vg has a large repository of minecraft protocol descriptions: [1] and [2] [0] http://ni.sijanec.eu/sijanec/n/tree/etc/portage/patches/games-action/polymc/crack.patch http://ni.sijanec.eu/sijanec/n/tree/etc/portage/patches/game... - flangola7 3y agoI've definitely played without an account. Last time I played accounts weren't even a thing for multiplayer servers
- charcircuit 3y agoSorry, but I'm calling you out. Minecraft accounts were created before multiplayer was even a feature. Accounts were originally for saving levels. This is an archive of the page for the second version of the game that had multiplayer. "You need to log in to join multiplayer games." https://web.archive.org/web/20090612021333/http://www.minecraft.net/servers.jsp https://web.archive.org/web/20090612021333/http://www.minecr... It was free to play the game before indev, which was before infdev, which was before the alpha. This older version of the game remained on the site as a demo, but it still required you to sign in for multiplayer.
- readthenotes1 3y agoWho is the pirate here? The former developers or the users? Surely you're not suggesting that someone can pirate their own property?
- charcircuit 3y ago>Who is the pirate here? The users of Eaglercraft. >Surely you're not suggesting that someone can pirate their own property? Mojang owns Minecraft. People who have a license to play the game can still pirate the game if they download the game from someone who does not have the rights to distribute the game. Eaglercraft did not even require someone to own an account to run.
