Someone else in the comments said it; learning a human language should be approached the same way as learning how to construct anything else. Learn how everything supports each other and why. Then it will click in your brain because your brain actually understands why things are the way they are, and how to use them.
For example
French "je." Okay, sounds and looks nothing like "I." Maybe a bit if you force it. "je(i)?"
But both come from Latin. So what's the connection?
Well, French "je" is descended from Latin "ego." Which means "I."
ego-eo-jo-je
So now your brain knows that. You don't have to consciously recall the direct translation or use a mnemonic anymore. You actually understand how French works.
