- cyberax 3y agoMeanwhile, TMT on Mauna Kea in Hawaii is blocked by kooky "practitioners" who think that their superstition entitles them to claim the whole mountain. Just because.
- triyambakam 3y agoI live in Hawaii and I'm not for either side, but I think you're unfairly smearing the opposition perspective. It's not "just because" that they oppose it. It relates to a long history of the overthrow of Hawaii and native people not having a say in how the place they have previously claimed as home is being used.
- frostburg 3y agoThe native people of Hawaii were wronged, but this doesn't make those specific beliefs more valid than the evangelical "we don't need to care about global warming because Jesus is coming back any day now" argument.
- causality0 3y agoWhich makes about as much sense as saying "We the collective British white people don't want anyone building mosques in London".

- samus 3y agoThe UK builds on a long history of private land ownership, a not quite so long history of religious and individual freedom, and an incomplete, but crucial separation of the state and the religious domain. These factors indeed run at odds with that statement. But native Hawaiians might have other ideas on how they want to use their land and prefer a collective decision making process.
- causality0 3y agoUnder what ownership scheme is it theirs? They don't own it legally and they don't own it by possession by living on it.
- samus 3y agoThat's exactly the point. It was theirs at some point. Nowadays, Hawaii is basically a colony of the USA.
- cyberax 3y ago> It was theirs at some point. Was it? How far are you willing to go? To the Kingdom of Hawaii, created when a brutal monarch united the islands? Or to the previous era of warring chiefdoms? > Nowadays, Hawaii is basically a colony of the USA. This is such a BS. Hawaii is a full US state.
- csh0 3y agoFortunately it seems that a potential path forward has been identified[0] “Since the beginning of this year, a new state-appointed oversight board has been preparing to assume management of Mauna Kea. Under a law signed in June 2022 by then-Hawaii Governor David Ige, a five-year transition period formally begins in July of this year. Then, in 2028, the Maunakea Stewardship Oversight Authority (MKSOA) will take over stewardship of the mountaintop from the University of Hawaii (UH), which has managed the site since 1968. Crucially, the MKSOA includes representatives from both astronomical observatories and Native Hawaiian communities. Its members say it marks a new approach, one that for the first time gives Native Hawaiians a voting role in overseeing the mountaintop.” This seems to me to be a reasonable, and pragmatic, solution. - cyberax 3y agoTMT will likely never be built. The funding is not there anymore, and the new funding (if it's found) will tie it up in court battles for another decade. And kooks will try to undermine the rest of telescopes using this the MKSOA. Ignorance has won.
