I don’t get all the hate for Duo. It’s fun, a better use of my screen time than a lot of other things I could be doing, and even if it doesn’t get me fluency, it has given me enough exposure in less than a year of training to speak with native speakers and be understood for basic things. It makes me more excited for travel opportunities too. I don’t need to be mistaken for a native but at least I’ll be a tourist who’s _trying_.

The hate comes from the fact that Duolingo positions itself as something that can do much more for you than that -- "The world's #1 way to learn a language" in fact, from its marketing materials. When in reality it just doesn't do all that much. And there are infinitely better (albeit less passive) ways to learn a language.
