memrise, duolingo, clozemaster, etc.. are all useful to get you reading words. If you're going to a place with foreign languages and not english written everywhere, it can be very useful to start understanding basic constructs and word formations. How certain letters are pronounced can also be a big help.
Nothing beats immersion though. Duolingo at it's best (in the languages offered) can help prepare you a little for immersion but you're going to find out very quickly so little of it is helpful in conversation.
