> Over the course of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Wagner has recruited tens of thousands of inmates, including murderers and domestic abusers, to fight some of the war’s bloodiest battles.
Did they really recruit “tens of thousands”? If true, that’s mind-boggling. What sort of desperation is that? Imagine if the US had to recruit prisoners to fight a war…this is failed state territory.
- toss1 4y agoYes, they did, and yes, it is
- karp773 4y agoThat's not how the Russians are thinking. Russian math is very straightforward: grind down 10,000 convicts to kidnap 10,000 Ukrainian kids. It's a good deal in their books.
- lisasays 4y agoYup - that's pretty much the game plan at this point.
- dragonwriter 4y ago> Imagine if the US had to recruit prisoners to fight a war… The US used to do that at the front door of crininal justice rather than the back, with judges selectively offering convicts the reduced or suspended sentences on condition of enlistment. Policy changes in, I think, the 1980s (this was very much still a thing in the Vietnam era) have really shut the door on that, though people keeping suggesting bringing it back.
