When I turned in my notice (in writing), I noted that according to my contract my notice period was X days, but that I wanted to ensure a proper handoff and would voluntarily extend my notice period to X+Y days. The employer was happy to accept X+Y, without arguing. HR even stated that they appreciated me doing it. Then again, I'm not in the US.
