To counter some of the doom in this thread: I was laid off this year (it was a tiny business that lost it's only client, so not exactly something in my control). I was doing schematic capture, board design, and RF testing. I was hired two weeks later by another company for something I've only been doing for ~1.5 years: FPGA design. At a 30% higher salary!
