Consciousness is an overrated anthropocentrism, and AGI could be a flying car or perpetual motion-type of fiction. What is essential beyond narrow AI are self-awareness and self-modification. Self-designing software and hardware systems are the landscape of the technological singularity.

I believe instead consciousness is the method of achieving this self design and self improvement that you have mentioned will be the basis of the technological singularity.
