OK NP.
While we're at it: Why does this site persist in the incredibly offensive practice of letting people waste their time typing out a question or comment and THEN telling them "oh you can't post right now." I really don't see any excuse for it.
If you can't post, the Reply button should be disabled, period. Any insight on that?
Oh, and then there's the "shadow-banning." Even more disgraceful disregard for users.
- dang 4y agoYes, I know that's annoying and am sorry. It's on my list to implement a better rate-limiting or probation system. Re shadow-banning - are you sure you're correct about this? For the last 9 years, shadowbanning on HN has almost always been for either (1) spammers or (2) new accounts that are showing signs of being repeat abusers. When an account has established history on the site, we don't shadowban them. We tell them we're banning them and why: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20banned&sort=byDate&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que....
- ShadowBanThis01 4y agoI've tested the "shadow-banning" by making posts (not with this account) and then logging out... and seeing the posts disappear. Could that happen for some other reason? But anyway, thanks for answering. What you did here (simply addressing the user directly) is the way to go! I know that might be an unmanageable workload though. Keep up the good work!
- dang 4y agoYes, there are other reasons why a post might get killed that are not the same thing as an account being banned. If an account is banned, all its posts are killed (except the ones that users vouch for - https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html). Other filters, though, will kill a post without banning the account. For example, a domain might be banned, in which case all submissions of URLs from that domain will get killed—but in most cases this won't affect the account. (You're welcome re answering! I try hard to answer all the questions I see, at least the sincere ones that it seems possible to answer - but yes, there's also just too much to do a good job in every case.)
