"to accomplish A I will knock down whatever barriers are in the way which will involve selective learning about X, Y, Z, etc..."
I agree with the sentiment and currently employ this approach. I also prefer to reach my own conclusions rather than research existing solutions. There's something important about working through the nuances of a problem, running into obstacles, and overcoming them just to realize the approach's limitation. The process of ideating does improve with practice. I try to embrace the process for that reason.
"I made some prints with different color management settings until I really understood what was going on."
In retrospect, how meaningful was that process? I find those experiences tend to be the most valuable.
"So even at an intro level where I barely know what I am doing, starting with the starter examples, I would feel like a failure if I just got it to work once in a Jupyter notebook, as soon as possible I try to "close the circle" and get that model running every day inside my RSS reader. A deeper understanding will come later."
I describe learning with an analogy about collecting keys today that may open future doors of opportunity. Understanding comes through experience and experience comes through struggle. In time, everything becomes butter.
