Canonical unveils Ubuntu 23.04 'Lunar Lobster': A Linux distro for work and play
- jqpabc123 4y agoIsn't the author one of the earliest prognosticators to declare "the year of Linux on the desktop" several decades ago? Obviously still livin' the dream.
- phendrenad2 4y agoThe article calls this a "masterclass for how an operating system should evolve", but let's see what it actually lists as new features: * New text-based installer for Ubuntu Server, which is apparently very good (which was also said about the old one when it was released, so take that as you will) * Remote management tools (for those of you in corporate-land) * Microsoft Active Directory support out of the box (for those of you in corproate-land) * Updated toolchains for C++, Go, Python, etc. (you can get that without updating, so it's just here to pad this list) * You can now pause snap updates on a per-snap basis (seems like basic functionality that was missing, and not really a new feature) * New GNOME version (there's always a new gnome version in an Ubuntu update, otherwise how will the news articles about it show pretty new screenshots?) * New Firefox, LibreOffice, etc. (another list-padder) * The Steam Snap is now in the stable channel (probably another list-padder) So once again, the call of corporate money draws forth the Linux updates, home user features are lacking, and basic functionality is spammed as marketing fluff.
