I agree with much of what Bengio writes here, but doubt that exhortations -- be they in an open letter or in a blog post -- will change anything. Some companies may pay lip service to the call for slowing down, but the financial incentives and network effects are such that few companies will actually slow down if they think they have a shot at dominating a software layer in what looks likely to become a new kind of AI stack.
