The problem is that the code and the diagram will eventually diverge, especially if multiple people are working on the same code base (which is why you have a diagram in the first place). There used to be software like Rational Rose were you would draw your state machine and then have the code generated but the code generated is hard to maintain and debug and ends up drifting away anyway.
