A good example of why backwards compatibility is important! I've been using GIMP for years with no clue that it was using a 10-year old version of GTK. And that's great.
- awill 4y agoWhat does that have to do with backwards compatibility? Gnome hasn’t received a major update in ages because it required so much work to support gtk4. Of course gimp would keep working if you keep it on gtk3.
- laweijfmvo 4y agoI guess I was imagining a scenario where Gnome 55 on Gtk 7 completely breaks compatibility with older Gtk apps and all the distros stopped providing Gtk 2/3 in their repositories and there were conflicts/headaches trying to get it all working. As long as Gtk continues to have backwards compat, old/unmaintained apps should never just 'stop working'.
- int_19h 4y agoBut your Gtk2 apps will not work on later versions of Gtk, and most distros are on the track to remove Gtk2 from the repos. So this isn't a hypothetical. And it will be the same once Gtk3 is phased out: https://docs.gtk.org/gtk4/migrating-3to4.html https://docs.gtk.org/gtk4/migrating-3to4.html
- robertlagrant 4y agoWhy are you agreeing so adversarially?
- awill 4y agoNot trying to be adversarial. But I’m not agreeing. Obviously gimp will keep working if they don’t upgrade the dependencies. I don’t understand how that is impressive.
