Social media is doomed to die
- sharemywin 4y agoSo each social network has to find ways to make you send another photo, or it has to deploy a brand-new feature and encourage you to use that, too. More usage, more space for ads, more money for investors. “We want to show our kinky side!” Tumblr users blogged to the heavens. “Sorry, can’t do it,” said the overlords at Yahoo. “It’s scaring the advertisers!”
- raxxorraxor 4y agoWhen the exodus from Tumblr happened, the internet got a lot crazier and I am not yet sure that I mean the eccentric and quirky version of crazy here. If platforms would have never listened to advertisers, we would not have this problem. And advertisers would still pay for attention. Youtube could have just said that you either accept all content or you won't get the attention. I doubt they would have lost any advertisers at all.
- lern_too_spel 4y agoThis is a pretty naïve take. Even products you pay a subscription for want you to keep using them (or you'll be at risk of cancelling), and they will resort to the same growth hacks to do so. The key difference is whether a product relies on recurring revenue, and the source of that recurring revenue makes no difference.
