I'd say these are all plot devices to look at singularity using "peripheral vision". I mean you can't "look straight at it". How do you write about things that are way beyond your ability to perceive or understand (by his definition of the singularity). I recall him discussing -somewhere- using the the repressive regime in the Peace War as a device to slow down history enough to pin a plot on it. In Tatja Grimm's world he also makes a really good attempt at writing about a human being who has a superhuman level of intelligence (relative to our current standards).
