Hypothetically speaking, if you're not a UK resident: Surely you can keep the password on a separate device in another country, and if asked for it, say that you do have know how to get the password, but you can't physically access it without travelling to the other country.
You then aren't breaking the rules, as far as I can tell. Of course you can't give them something that is only available in another country, where those laws would not hold up.
- flangola7 3y agoHow would explain you were able to unlock and use the device within in the past minutes or hours? (Which could be easy to prove)
- kevviiinn 3y agoPass code is randomly generated by a person in the other country and it changes every 15 minutes. You must contact this person to get the code and they cannot be compelled by the laws in your country
- flangola7 3y agoHow do you set that up on an Android or iOS device?
- yootyootr 3y agoUse a TOTP for a second factor of authentication and give it to your friend abroad.
- flangola7 3y agoSo you have to contact your friend every time you unlock your phone screen?
- mptest 3y agoThat's what your lawyer would say is the case is the impression I got. Or, more seriously, perhaps that could be a toggle. Similar to how if you hit the panic button on iphones it no longer takes biometrics until you give it the code? That might solve for ease of use.
- flangola7 3y agoLawyers aren't allowed to lie in court. Hitting a panic button would mostly likely qualify as evidence tampering, disruption of investigation, or evasion of justice.
- eertami 3y agoThese were non-uniformed undercover police that intercepted the guy. In this scenario it's very plausible to think you're about to be robbed, and hitting a 'lock device until I return home' panic button could never be considered any of those things given the circumstances (under UK law, anyway.)
