According to my back of the envelope calculation, we would need to sequester about 272,000 trees to offset the training of one LLM like GPT4.

- metacritic12 4y agoWhat about one very large containership from asia to the USA?
- MuffinFlavored 4y ago> How much co2 is produced from container ship? > However, ships emit only between 10 to 40 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. The carbon footprint of airplanes is 20 to 30 times more than ships. https://8billiontrees.com/carbon-offsets-credits/carbon-ecological-footprint-calculators/air-freight-vs-sea-freight-carbon-footprint/#:~:text=However%2C%20ships%20emit%20only%20between,of%20carbon%20dioxide%20per%20kilometer.&text=The%20carbon%20footprint%20of%20airplanes,30%20times%20more%20than%20ships https://8billiontrees.com/carbon-offsets-credits/carbon-ecol.... https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/headlines/society/20191129STO67756/emissions-from-planes-and-ships-facts-and-figures-infographic https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/headlines/society/201...
- nanidin 4y agoIf you use 40g per km as commented here, it comes out to about 1 tree. Something seems off.
- oliwary 4y agoA while ago I calculated that a 1km sided cube of wood would be the equivalent of 12 years of global co2 emissions (with a caveat that this was a very back of napkin kind of calculation). This is, of course, a massive cube, but smaller than I expected.
- nanidin 4y agoYeah, I worked out roughly how much land these trees would require to grow and it was less than 0.5 square miles. I was surprised.
