- teraflop 4y agoHN has worked that way for a long time. The submission guidelines say: > If the title contains a gratuitous number or number + adjective, we'd appreciate it if you'd crop it. E.g. translate "10 Ways To Do X" to "How To Do X," and "14 Amazing Ys" to "Ys." Exception: when the number is meaningful, e.g. "The 5 Platonic Solids." ...but what they don't tell you is that at some point, somebody decided it would be a good idea for the site to automatically remove numbers from titles, with no regard for whether they're "meaningful".
- dredmorbius 4y agoIt's an anti-listicle thing, noted in guidelines and numerous moderator comments: E.g.: <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26826830 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26826830> <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26826830 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26826830> Search: <https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20magic%20numbers%20title&sort=byPopularity&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...>
