Montana lawmakers approve statewide ban on TikTok
- mdmglr 4y agoDoes this set the precedent for state to ban other apps, and perhaps creating an enforcement department? Would it be reasonable for the state to demand data from device manufacturers and app stores to see what apps users are running? Would wealthy organizations be able to get competitor apps banned in return for a payment to the governor?
- schemescape 4y agoThis article is very light on details. How does the bill distinguish TikTok from other apps? On what grounds is it being banned? Is the web site being banned too?
- erehweb 4y agoHere's the bill. https://leg.mt.gov/bills/2023/billpdf/SB0419.pdf https://leg.mt.gov/bills/2023/billpdf/SB0419.pdf It just singles out TikTok and cites China as a concern.
- schemescape 4y agoWow, only 3 pages! It looks like they originally planned to ban the web site, but that got struck from the bill. It’s interesting that TikTok is identified by name (with inconsistent capitalization). What happens if they change the name or relaunch as a slightly different app or whatever? Oh well, I’m curious to see how this plays out.
- erehweb 4y agoBill says TikTok means the social network service owned by Bytedance or any successors
- schemescape 4y agoThanks, I only skimmed it and must have skipped that part.
