- TMWNN 4y ago> A day after graduating in 1947, she married Lawrence Norwood, a graduate student who had been her calculus instructor during her third semester. > This would be a Cancellation moment in the modern world... She was no longer his student. Even today people would make jokes about it, but I think he'd be all right. Norms have changed, of course. In X-Men #3, the third appearance of the mutant team, a thought bubble shows Professor Xavier to be in love with his student Jean Grey, perhaps 17. This was not scandalous in 1963, when it was not unusual for women to a) marry right after high school graduation, and b) marry their high school and college instructors. The X-Men comics only became popular in the late 1970s, during the Chris Claremont era. Many new fans who read this story in the 1970s and 1980s in back issues and reprints thought of this as taboo and scandalous in a sense unintended by Stan Lee, the writer. Since the thought was never mentioned again fans assumed that it was a one-time thing that had never happened (you know what I mean) ... until Xavier's feelings for Jean became a plot point in the Onslaught storyline, more than 30 years later!
- netsharc 4y ago> Her school guidance counselor suggested that she become a librarian, advice that she ignored. Instead she applied to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she was one of about a dozen women in her entering class.
