Why People Are Fleeing Blue Cities for Red States

- jleyank 4y agoLow taxes and weather. But low taxes tends towards low services, and current political trends make it difficult for many groups. Weather might become less of an advantage if temperatures keep rising and/or storms keep getting stronger. The fight to avoid purple states will be messy, but perhaps inevitable? Perhaps there’s a generational change being prepared by the influx of urbanites?
- 0zemp1c 4y ago> low taxes tends towards low services do you think people moving from Manhattan care about school lunch programs? their kids go to (private, expensive) school wearing sneakers equal to a teacher's monthly pay these people have "won" enough in life to have at-will mobility...these aren't the types of people who care about the duration of unemployment insurance, government-assisted healthcare, etc etc etc probably the only government services they care about are public safety related (police, fire), and the places they tend to move to have those in spades
- Kye 4y ago>> "probably the only government services they care about are public safety related (police, fire), and the places they tend to move to have those in spades" Not always. Police were unreliable out here (metro Atlanta) long before BLM and co hurt their feelings by calling attention to rampant police abuse. EMS and firefighters were always prompt and professional, though.
- 0zemp1c 4y ago> Police were unreliable out here (metro Atlanta) long before BLM go look at where rich people live in Atlanta, I bet you'll see police everywhere this is where people from Manhattan move to, they have more than enough money to buy into the best neighborhoods wherever they go the neighborhoods they end up in are often gated, their kids go to private schools...frankly low taxes are actually a real draw for these people no different than Dallas, Houston, Austin in Texas...where the rich folks live, there are police to spare
- Kye 4y agoI didn't see any police the last time I was in the rich part of Atlanta.
- 0zemp1c 4y agowell I can tell you here in Austin TX, rich folks from California end up in either Rollingwood or West Lake Hills, and both have their own police forces that are ridiculously overprovisioned (despite the fact that both suburbs have basically zero crime to begin with)
- LinuxBender 4y agoFor me it was taxes, covid lockdowns, violent crime, homelessness, state government fraud waste and abuse. I moved to a state with no income tax and all the other taxes are near the national average, no homeless people sleeping in front of stores it's too cold for that to be a thing, no soft targets soon even some of the teachers will be armed and so far I am quite happy with the move. To be clear I am neither left nor right but it doesn't matter. People just want freedom and to be left alone. It's not Utopia but it's good enough for me.
- gladiatr72 4y agoAlso, what is a modest income in these areas can set someone up like a prince elsewhere in the country. It is notable that so many are undergoing the inconvenience of moving but the rationale is not complex.
