Juice launch to Jupiter – Live [video]
- braymundo 3y agoIf you just started watching, at this point the team is waiting for the first signals from the probe. [Edit: acquired successfully :)].
- robin_reala 3y ago…and signal acquired! Telemetry is coming in.

- woliveirajr 3y agoAfter SpaceX, I always expect to see live cams. Of course, that would just add weight and complexity without relevant benefits except the entertainement... but being entertained is fun :-)
- go_elmo 3y agoGetting more publicity and public support and get the science much further in the mid to long term. Its a legitimate consideration to make imo. Were not bound by rocket capacity as much as we are by public support & funding.
- harles 3y agoCertainly helps with their next set of grant proposals.
- felixg3 3y agoI think that proper science communication and marketing is crucial, at the same time, it is very difficult to explain with numbers and graphs, while it is so much easier with multispectral imaging (see the success of Hubble and the Mars images).
- go_elmo 3y agoIt makes absolute sense. Our perception system is a giant Filter. Providing more information to it by emtion-provoking images rather than abstract, low info graphs seems logical to achieve higher retainaince and presence in people
- pfdietz 3y agoLive cam data can be useful in analysis of failures.
- Kye 3y agoWhat can a camera tell you that more sensors couldn't?
- macintux 3y agoI’m not remotely an expert, but cameras have a much larger coverage area than any sensor could. And I assume a sensor can tell you “this piece stopped talking” but a camera in right place could tell you “because it fell off when a screw fell out”, so presumably they’re complementary.
- Diederich 3y agoVideo of the SRB leak just prior to the Challenger disaster was quite useful after the fact.
- pfdietz 3y agoAlso, the video of the foam chunk hitting the Columbia's wing. An early Falcon 1 launch failed because the first stage recontacted the second after staging. You'll note one of the F9 cameras is looking up at the second stage from inside the first stage's interstage section.
- Diederich 3y agoThe Columbia case is a better example than the Challenger case, because they actually caught that right after launch and analyzed it, though incorrectly.
- ncphil 3y agoWell, the analysis at the engineering level was correct. Problem is, the engineers weren't allowed to confirm it. That was a management decision, made on the grounds that, "There's nothing we can do".
- behnamoh 3y agoEntertainment = Money. People will support things that give them a good time. Just look at the Hollywood.
- usrusr 3y agoCertainly a peculiar relationship. Your post made me wonder when the first dogecoin private key will reach escape velocity. Any bets? I think we can agree that the "if" and "who" is already settled...
- nanidin 3y agoAssuming signals move through fiber optic cables at 69% of c, it has already been done. A similar argument could be made for a key being transmitted via radio signal that has slipped out to space.
- mikebonnell 3y agoCongrats to the whole Juice and ESA teams involved!
- zabzonk 3y agothis kind of stuff always encourages me to think we can do good things, when we are not being mind-numbingly stupid.
- addled 3y agoOh nice! I've always thought this was a cool mission, but it has felt more... personal after seeing 17776.
- thirdmunky 3y agoThe parent is referring to this article [1], which features JUICE and two other satellites as characters observing humans on earth after the advent of immortality. It's a great read. It's thoroughly and wonderfully human. [1] https://www.sbnation.com/a/17776-football https://www.sbnation.com/a/17776-football
- moffkalast 3y agoI hope it has lots of neatly partitioned meats and cheeses onboard.
- AtiRadeon9700 3y agoThis launch reminded me of the now long-cancelled JIMO mission.. JUICE is probably _fine_, but I can't help wishing that we had had the $ and the stones to go for the real deal :)

- hermitcrab 3y agoI couldn't a damn about sports. But I get quite nervous watching rocket launches, thinking about all the money and effort that have gone into them. I was so relieved when the JW turned out to be a massive success.
