Graphic shows how global fertility rate has plummeted 50% since 1970

'Declining birth rates will put America in a position where there are 'more older people and fewer workers,' Dr Kearney explains. This will stress on public programs like social security and Medicare, where a younger workforce funds care for the elderly." Well as a 30 something American, I don't really expect us to make sure our elderly are cared for. I expect that we'll let nature and the elements take care of the 'problem' after gutting of social programs. Excluding of course families with the money to afford to take care of their grandparents/parents.

- iamerroragent 4y agoCall me cynical but I suspect that many old American's with money are not going to be too concerned about funding social programs. If anything I suspect they would welcome the cuts because of 'lower taxes'.
- beardyw 4y agoWhen the worry changes from too many people in the world to too few you have to wonder what the issue is. If the underlying systems rely on growth, they are nothing but Ponzi schemes, and our forefathers set us up to fail. If the population tops out at 10 billion I think we can call it enough.
