Excruciating moment Elon Musk turns tables on BBC interviewer over ‘hate’ tweets
- guiambros 4y agoAlso video version [1]; same content. Initially I thought this was just a deep fake. Then I saw the original BBC article [2] (which conveniently leaves out all the embarrassing parts), and everyone else (but BBC) reporting on the blunder. I normally despise Musk's antics, but I must admit I agree with him in this case. I don't have evidence to say if "hate speech" has increased or not, but whatever the case, it's unacceptable for a journalist to make blunt statements without having concrete examples to justify the point they're trying to make. ps: having said that, I hate the "For you" page. Not due to hate speech, but I prefer to curate manually who I follow and what shows up in my timeline, so I don't want any of their recommendation engine crap. But that's beyond the point, and "Following" tab still works (for now). - powerbroker 4y agoI'm trained as a lawyer. This line of 'challenge' is something I use 3-4 times yearly. Frequently, it is with a person who is hyperventilating about some 'characterization'. I'm not as patient as Musk -- maybe because the microphones aren't running. Literally, I'll ask the question twice -- and if no coherent response comes back, I dismiss the person. Be prepared, though. Because you will quite likely enrage your counterparty, and they will just get more blustery, when you hit them up this way. So be warned.
- londgine 4y agoWhile the interviewer is definitely to blame for not preparing, it is not _that_ bad of an answer for an informal debate. If I claimed that many tweets contained the letter e, and my opponent asked me to give them an example, just one example. I wouldn't be able to, off the top of my head. That is because I don't know any tweets off the top of my head. In the video's case I would expect the interviewer to pull out his phone and browse Twitter for a few seconds to find an offending tweet. Of course if he fails to find one after a few seconds, that will make him look worse than he already did.
