Ask HN: Will China ever have white people in government?
Probably seems like a strange question, but consider that in the West, you can see "non-majority ethnic group" people in the government:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Asian_Americans_and_Pacific_Islands_Americans_in_the_United_States_Congress
Not that many, and I'm not sure how it compares to the "ratio" of these ethnicities to "Anglosaxon" or whatever as a whole, but China has 4x to 5x the people (tho presumably a lot lower number of non-Han-Chinese).
Somehow tho, I just don't see China ever embracing this. Is there a reason? Or am I wrong and is it possible?
I know in HK at least there have been a few white people in government positions:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Zimmerman_(politician) - yet only a district councilor, not in LegCo
But I don't think this has happened in Taiwan or Macao, or the Mainland (at least since 1949).

- celine1719 4y agoThe "white people" are categorized as Ethnic Minorities in China, they are natives, not immigrants. The PRC recognizes 55 minority ethnic groups in China, which including Ethnic Russians (who are white people as you may refer),Kazakh,Uyghur, etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_China https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_China In the National People's Congress, which is the national legislature and constitutionally the supreme state authority of the PRC, it has Ethnic Minorities and Overseas Chinese delegates, and there is at least one delegate belonging to each of these ethnic groups in the current (12th) NPC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_People%27s_Congress#Election_and_membership https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_People%27s_Congress#E...
- mandaloric 4y agoEthnic Russians can be not white, because people in Russia who have borders with China have a lot of racial mix. Kazakh,Uyghur also not white because they are asian.
- graderjs 4y agoInteresting, thank you, I did not know that! I knew there were white Russians in China that are nevertheless "Chinese" (by observing culture and language). I did not know they are represented in the NPC. \__ ((Wow...the racial definition is tricky, and while not the interesting question here, I'll talk out loud to try to come up with a better definition: my "white people" includes all people--such as those Westerners (Europeans, Americans, Australians, NZers, Canadians, British, etc...) that may become "naturalized Chinese citizens" -- who are "white" (whatever that means) Anglosaxon or whatever...could be more expanded to Spanish, Turkish, Middle Eastern..."white" is not such a great word--but that definition here, while tricky, is not so interesting as the main question--so in this case, maybe we can replace white with "other races" and use it as a stand-in to mean, "non-han-Chinese and not from ethnic group originating in East (NE, SE) Asia." -- so it could be people from India, Middle East as well as "typically" "white" Europeans/etc.)) So--back to the main question--is it possible (legally), and probably (realistic to expect) these people to hold senior leadership in the Central government? So NPC has around 3000 members--while certainly "senior" there are several more powerful positions above it like: NPC Standing Committee - 150 people Politburo Standing COmmittee - 7 members Central Committee - 200 people State Council - 35 people Central Military Commission - unknown small number is it possible (legally), and probably (realistic to expect) these non-han-Chinese people (naturalized Chinese citizens or descendents of non-ethnic-Chinese immigrants into China) to hold senior leadership in the Central government, which may be expressed as membership on one of those above small groups? What about in Taiwan, Macao or HK?
- mandaloric 4y agoThey building mono-ethnic nation with mono-language, they don't need white people. I'm saying it as white. In the West, you can see "non-majority ethnic group" people in the government only because this was a result of taking PoC from their own home for slavery, like, British and American take, and now they are paying for this trick. China also don't need black people, because they using own nation for things, that US and BE does with slaves.
- mandaloric 4y agoSo this is here 'unethical' answer for your question. Thanks for question, if interesting, we can discuss.
- King-Aaron 4y agoI know this is a pretty inane answer, but... "lol no"
