I am gonna try siding with the foundation, in the end all crates are from the ground up in Rust. So, why add the extra 5 characters (including a separation character), to your project. Without using the word "Rust" the project would be equivalent to a brand name, no?
It's strict, like the language. Won't compile till you fix all errors.
But the possibility that you can be sued, I guess that is what the community is so harsh about. They should rewrite the policy, so that even a 5 year old can't be sued, imho.

But the crate-name is often the same name as the git repo or project-name in general, which exists outside crates.io and will benefit from a language-disambiguation. This is still a stupid decision.

They should rewrite the policy, so that even a 5 year old can't be sued, imho. The possibility of lawsuits and licensing fees for crates, projects, etc. that have been in use for years is a big part of the worry. It goes against the spirit of good will that the Rust community is known for and has a 'bait and switch' feel to some people.
