Maybe it was on purpose, as by cutting the size of four gates to handle all but the largest aircraft, net-net you get a whole extra gate or two. I was about to snark about project anti-patterns and blame weak parenting for raising generations of worms, but I'd be willing to bet instead of 18 total gates, you get 20 gates by giving up some of the largest ones. Accepting the economics of maybe 10-15% of aircraft as a design constraint on all gates seems unwise, and maybe some climate people figured the same.
