I think this option should be available. I agree with you that it's unfortunate that this topic is taboo. However, I question whether our society can successfully allow this option. Further, I don't think our healthcare system (I live in the US, FWIW) is up to the challenge of navigating this issue without causing greater harm. It seems like health insurance providers already influence treatment and outcomes in ways that are problematic. For example, I think we have to first get past the subject being taboo before we can seriously consider allowing something like what's discussed in this article. (And that seems like just the first of many steps.)
