I have found dashboard screens bad on two levels: first, there's no tactile feedback - I have to look at the damned thing to accomplish whatever I want to do. This takes my eyes off the road, which can be sorta creative at times. Second, my cars last 8+ years while my tablets last 3+ years. These things are specialized devices locked into a particular environment. Between their death and obsolescence I'm going to be left with a car that lacks environmental controls long before it fails doing "car" things.
Better that the vendors just added a standard bracket for android or Apple tablets. This would make them easy to swap and upgrade, and it's coming down to the software no matter what hardware is used - at least remove a point of failure.
