Author(2001) here. Very not what I expected to encounter browsing hn this evening. Ama. I years later prototyped a similarly dotty, but zoomable-chunkable interactive. So dots zoomed from 1e9 yr to 1e-3 s. And could be flexibly chunked, so a day might instead be chunked as hours and minutes of various shapes. Mouse-over dots for info. Never finished. Hmm, it seems I still had some residual surprise that someone else hasn't gotten around to creating something similar over these last two decades (that I know of). But with what I've seen since, no longer. A sense of time, of size, of reasonable values and transferable understanding in general, is so very not an educational priority. Ah well. Maybe LLM tutoring and testing will catalyze change.
