My father was a poor fisherman in Italy before he emigrated to Australia. He told us that on the boat they used to use smooth stones to wipe and then drop the stones in the sea. However a rich spoilt cousin used to take silk handkerchiefs with him to wipe with and discard.
I believe they were thrown overboard too, and not taken home to be laundered and re-used, otherwise it wouldn't have been particularly remarkable in a country where most people have bidet cloths.

- simonblack 4y agoPlenty of smallish smooth stones on the beach. I have a few as souvenirs. The house with the blue stripes near the palm trees and the steps down to the 'beach' was where my dad lived. Close enough to walk to the job.
