Currently at a "FAANG" Big Tech company who has had layoffs recently. Even though our team wasn't too heavily impacted, it has definitely led to some huge morale issues. Generally people just seem less enthusiastic. Lots of benefits and perks are getting cut as well.
I've also noticed some signs of people being stressed. There is occasional snippy comments, and some people get a little territorial on claiming visible impact and projects. Overall just not much fun! What's weird is I still have interviews to do! 5 this year so far...

Most "tech workers" laid offs were in non-technical positions as well (ie not engineers). HR, recruiting, DEI... The percentage of engineers impacted was minimal. https://interviewing.io/blog/2022-layoffs-engineers-vs-other-departments https://interviewing.io/blog/2022-layoffs-engineers-vs-other... https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-24/tech-layoffs-are-hitting-diversity-and-inclusion-jobs-hard https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-24/tech-layo... https://www.computerworld.com/article/3690309/about-those-tech-layoff-headlines-most-companies-arent-firing-it-workers.html https://www.computerworld.com/article/3690309/about-those-te... https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023-03-07-do-recent-layoffs-mean-the-tech-talent-crunch-is-over https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2023-03-0... https://techreport.com/news/3493451/microsoft-layoffs-ethics-and-society-team-fired/ https://techreport.com/news/3493451/microsoft-layoffs-ethics...
- confidantlake 4y agoYeah it is pretty weird. I interviewed last year and got put in hiring committee but told nothing would happen until roles opened up. Then all the layoffs started. And still, last month they interviewed my friend who has a similar skill set to me. Feels like there is this big hiring machine that keeps churning regardless. No one is there to say, hey maybe we should hold off for a while or check their resume before we subject them to the interview gauntlet.
- JoeAltmaier 4y agoYeah a local engineering company has been to college hiring fairs for years, and never hired a living soul. Because they're not growing.
