What to do, if some discredit you by falsely accusing of using sockpuppets?
- turtleyacht 4y agoI enjoy most of the comments I've read from you, although that is just a subset. I'm not sure if you use sockpuppets. I didn't know that was happening. Do you mean you have been accused of using fake accounts to upvote your submissions? Sounds like too much work. I do see your stuff often, but I'm usually busy in this loop: * Feel guilty about not contributing to HN * Resolve to learn something worthwhile * Check HN again * Repeat :)
- orionblastar 4y agoNothing you can do. It is a smear that can not be proven or disproven without access to the admin logs and IP addresses. I once used sockpuppets when I was younger and more foolish. Not anymore.
- anenefan 4y agoI would suggest not to worry about it, I had the briefest look and it seems some people thought it was magic you could guess or research what was important about a certain date. Sure some things can give away a wannabe clever player while they're using socks, which most people might not notice. Too many amateurs though, trip over mere coincidences and try to apply phraseology without understanding that when people talk / chat online, they'll often pick up other words or phrases, or fail to grasp two or more people have unwittingly shared behaviours from being part of similar work spaces or forums they've been part of. Sometimes it is just pure coincidence. (Only 2 weeks ago or so I used a oft not used phrase in my vocabulary replying to someone's apparently vacant site ... blown away when someone else provided a different link to the same and there's that same phrase being used.) I also doubt HN really nails identifying data for logging each account given the anonymous nature of account setup, but even so, I'd assume most people here would understand to use a proxy at the very least, so there's no good going down that path requesting staff confirm different IPs.
