Origin of the template phrase: "Are we having fun yet?" is a phrase from the comic Zippy the Pinhead, which entered into the popular consciousness in... I think the 80s... without making the comic any more well known. GNU Emacs used to have a M-x yow command that would dispense a random Zippy quote, and while it was loading, it would give the message "Are we consing yet?"
- stfutechbros 4y agoIs there some direct reference to Zippy and Emacs? That connection seems less likely than the extremely common and well known phrase "are we there yet?"
- smcl 4y agoIt's also the catchphrase of a fictional product a character (played by Adam Scott) in "Party Down" (show about struggling actors working in catering) advertises. It's his only real success as an actor, and it follows him around throughout the show. Interestingly the show is returning: https://longreads.com/2023/02/28/are-we-having-fun-yet-the-oral-history-of-party-down/ https://longreads.com/2023/02/28/are-we-having-fun-yet-the-o...
- tough 4y agoOmg, I knew the phrase ringed a bell but couldn't understand really why, as I wasn't around in the 80's for the comics... Yeah Party Down was a great series, good that has a comeback
