It’s worth remembering no airliner has crashed due to a laser strike as far as records go.
This is a longer sentence then drunk driving, which kills ~10,000 people annually.
- operatingthetan 4y agoIf you read pilot subs or forums it's pretty clear that this happens quite frequently to pilots and they report it and the report goes into a black hole or they look for the perpetrator and they never find them. I think the strategy then is hard consequences for those who are actually caught. I use a green laser for astronomy in a city and if we see planes around we turn it off.
- demarq 4y agoSo punish other people by punishing someone else?
- operatingthetan 4y agoI don't follow. Punish those who are caught with harsh sentences in order to deter other crimes. A common legal and law enforcement strategy around the world. I don't agree with it, but that's the concept.
- multjoy 4y agoThe deterrent is not the sentence, but the risk of getting caught.
- dolni 4y agoThat's such a tired argument. It is very obviously a combination of consequence and risk of getting caught. If you reduced the maximum sentence for murder to one day in prison, there would absolutely be a lot more murdering going on even if everything else stayed the same.
- randyrand 4y agoThat’s assuming the people with laser pointers (mostly kids and teens) read the news / have parents that read the news.
