In other words, we aren’t accounting for the costs of topsoil and ecosystem destruction, or greenhouse gases from fertilizer and pesticide production. Industrial agriculture has increased yield mostly via unsustainable external inputs: fertilizer, pesticides, and motorized machines (oil, oil, and more oil).
