High contrast themes are the only thing that have worked for me (black background, bright foreground). I also use keyboard shortcuts in my IDE to increase/decrease the fontsize if I'm really having trouble focusing on text. Although I have noticed that no matter what I do nothing beats eye strain better than taking a break away from the screen, if that's possible.
