Also not a lawyer but I feel like repurposing a logo is creating a derivative work. If you buy a physical VW logo and affix it to something, you've changed the meaning of the logo, and I'd assume that use of the logo is something the trademark holder has sole right to control. Logos aren't copyrighted (I don't think) but they're in the same ballpark as copyrighted work and so I wouldn't be surprised if the same logic applies.
